This data is then synchronised to the cloud as an additional backup.

How do I choose between the two?

The two certainly have a lot of similarity. Both deliver cloud storage, data-sharing, and synchronization services; both use the same underlying design and features. Furthermore, a valid Office 365 Licence is required for each, as is the OneDrive Sync Client, which is needed to enable synchronization if you choose to work via a web browser.

Yet ultimately, SharePoint is a collaboration and cloud storage solution tool designed for use by the whole business. Multiple users have the ability to access permitted data stored within a location at the exact same time with maximum convenience. Meanwhile, OneDrive is a single SharePoint document library on a single site, designed primarily for use by a single person to securely store data. They are fundamentally different products.
